The first time you use it for a given product, you need to select the formats you want to install. It is actually a bit more trouble to render a customer-facing installer for us, but our payment for that extra effort is a process we fully control, and which is specifically tailored to our needs. It was first rolled out in a Dubstation update a few weeks ago, and has since been used (as of this writing) for the latest Enso update, RoughRider3, and Replicant3. Our biggest issue right now is that it works so fast that people don’t think anything happened, and we’re actually pondering putting in a fake visual speed bump just to make people feel like they got an install experience worthy of the name. We had some hiccups with ours, but on the whole it was an interesting problem to solve, and seems to have improved the experience greatly. I honestly don’t know why more companies don’t make their own installer, or there isn’t a commercial cross-platform solution. You can see part of our process in an extremely truncated form on the JUCE forum if you’re curious as to how we pulled it off. I could get deep in the weeds on this, but I won’t. Since that doesn’t exist, at least in any form we can buy, I decided to make one, much to the bemusement of Adam and all my developer friends ( except one, who did the same thing, for the same reasons.) As it turns out, it wasn’t very difficult, except (as usual, so all is right with the world) on macOS, where security theater is the order of the day. And what I wanted was an installer that is the same on every platform, and is made specifically for the needs of audio plugins. Now, however, I find that I am one of the elders, and I can do what I want. Some would begin quivering, and in hushed tones tell us of that time they tried to do something different, and how awful it was. ![]() Most of them would just shake their heads in sadness. Every couple years, in the developer forums we have a presence in, I’d ask the elders about this. None of those three methods is very good for plugins. And on Mac, everyone uses a freeware GUI for the built-in OS method that mostly works but requires a lot of repetitive tasks. We have always used some ancient installer maker thing on Windows that has the worst made-up scripting language I’ve ever come across it is, and I am not exaggerating, effectively like trying to write the script for a modern sitcom using cuneiform. ![]() I couldn’t figure out the “blessed” method on Linux, because it seems to be the usual “assemble a collection of sticks and pieces of rusty metal we have hidden in various places all over the world” and I don’t have that kind of time. One thing that has greatly annoyed us in our continual rebuild is the lack of symmetry in the install process for our three different desktop environments. While I tell people I am a product designer (if I’m feeling magnanimous towards myself) or a UI designer (if I’m being realistic) or a UX designer (ditto masochistic), in point of fact the vast majority of my job is just getting things to build on the four operating systems we make products for, and making sure they still mostly work. And experience has taught us that the hard part of having an audio software company is, in fact, keeping the products you already have working. One of the very, very few benefits of age is experience. Back in 2003 or so, when I was much younger and demonstrably dumber, I thought the hard part of having an audio software company would be having ideas for new products.

This is set up through Group Policy and allows you to specify which Event IDs you want to send. ![]() This can be used for just Sysmon logs or for all Windows logs, if you prefer. If the Splunk UF does not work well in your environment, Windows Event Forwarding (WEF) can also be used to send the Symon logs from endpoints to a centralized server for collecting logs. Running this as a regularly scheduled task (as often as you would make changes to the configuration) will allow the endpoints to maintain the updated version without much maintenance. This will prevent users from being able to see and circumvent the Sysmon logs and will maintain security on the configuration files. Have the task run as the Builtin System account (NT Authority\System) or another user created for this purpose and limit the shared folder access to only computer accounts (or said user), and the privileged users that will be modifying the script and configuration. One way to deploy the script and configuration file is to have a scheduled task run the script from a shared folder with the configuration file in that same folder. If not, it will uninstall the current version and install the new version with the current configuration file provided. If the version matches what is expected in the script, it will update the configuration on the system. The script will check to see if Sysmon is installed and which version is running on the endpoint. I have a PowerShell script on GitHub that can serve as an example deployment script. There are a few considerations to take into account with this approach, as if it is done poorly it can result in information disclosure that can potentially allow a malicious actor to circumvent your Sysmon logging. The simplest way to deploy Sysmon is with a Group Policy enforced Scheduled Task to run a PowerShell or Batch script. I will discuss how I approach tuning in Part 2 of this blog. Sysmon can generate a large amount of events when not tuned, and it could overwhelm a license that is too small. Deploy Sysmon to that test group first for a week or two in order to generate a good amount of logs and create an initial tuning configuration to deploy company wide. When using Splunk, I highly recommend having a test bed of select, in-use computers in a variety of departments. The next choice is how you intend to deploy Sysmon to the endpoints in your environment. If you decide to use SwiftOnSecurity’s configuration, I would recommend the following configuration additions, as the default configuration will not exclude Splunk processes and can create a large amount of events: So for a very simple, one-shot configuration it works great, but the second popular configuration is much better suited to a well-tuned environment. The main disadvantage is that, as you tune your configuration to your environment, the one file deployment makes it difficult to keep track of those changes. The advantages of this configuration are that it is simple to modify, roll out changes, and keep up to date. You can download it on GitHub and easily install Sysmon with it to be up and running in a few minutes. ![]() SwiftOnSecurity has a simplified one file configuration that is great to start out with to see what is possible with Sysmon. ![]() There are two popular configurations that are easy to deploy and have done a lot of the initial legwork, and both are great choices to start with. It is possible to make your own configuration, but it takes a good understanding of what logs you want to generate and can create a decent amount of unpredictable logs. The first major choice is the initial configuration of your Sysmon build. You’ll need to decide on an initial configuration, deployment method, and forwarding mechanism. Sysmon has a simple installation, although there are a few decisions you will need to make before you prepare to install it in your environment. This blog series will help prepare you to get Sysmon up and running, deploy it in your environment, and forward the event logs to your Splunk indexers. If you are curious about the potential of Sysmon, I did a short talk showing some of its capabilities. ![]() It generates much more detailed and expansive logs than the default Windows logs, and it provides a great, free alternative to many of the Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) solutions available. ![]() Some of us might enjoy browsing satellite maps to check out the world around us, but there's more to it. SpaceX has no interest in creating a network of livestreaming video satellites for now, but time will tell as technology advances. Although SpaceX is working on deploying thousands of satellites for its Starlink internet service, it lacks the necessary external camera system. The high cost of deployment, additional equipment weight, and significant network bandwidth required to keep everything online 24 hours a day are demanding roadblocks. To complicate the situation, we would likely need thousands of active low-orbit satellites working together to produce anything usable to the consumer. Without mounting an external camera, satellites don't possess the necessary features to livestream video. Webcams are specifically designed to stream video, but a satellite's primary purpose is to capture high-definition images. However, this concept doesn't work with satellites since they don't specialize in livestreaming videos. They allow us to watch various locations across any part of the world from the comfort of our homes at any time of the day or night. They're grounded and bound to a single location. You'll find online webcams that show a worldwide real-time view. Is it possible to view real-time satellite video? We cover a variety of choices a little later on. Many free services offer satellite image quality in meters, while the premium paid services provide higher resolution options in centimeters. To get the best possible satellite image experience, look for a service that uses centimeters for its spatial resolution. Since meters are much larger than centimeters, you can expect these images to be less detailed, especially regarding buildings or landmarks. And the lower the cm count of a satellite image, the higher the resolution you get, giving you an even cleaner result.ĭepending on the type of satellite image service, some only offer lower-resolution images using meters instead of centimeters. This means every pixel covers a 30 cm by 30 cm square of land. Say you have a service that offers 30 cm spatial resolution satellite images. Because Earth is so large, each pixel must be represented in larger chunks of land coverage since megapixels are limited by scope. ![]() ![]() Unlike photos from a smartphone camera, typically defined by megapixels (MP), satellite images are measured in centimeters (cm) or meters (m). Google's combined effort with these third-party contributions makes Google Maps and Google Earth possible on such a large scale. It mentions that this data is a team effort consisting of various entities, including state agencies, geological survey organizations, and other commercial imagery providers. These aerial photos are used to create detailed maps and other unique features, such as 3D trees and buildings.Īt the same time, Google only develops some images they use to create the Google Maps and Google Earth experience. In the case of Google Maps and Google Earth, they also tap into planes that fly over land while taking even higher-quality ground images. It's common for satellites in space to take high-resolution photos, but that's not to say it's the only method to capture these images. Google Maps and Google Earth are the most well-known examples many of us turn to when we want to view satellite images online. |
